Hereford has the oldest bowling green in the world
Hereford has lay claim to being home of the “oldest bowling green on the planet”.
The green, owned by Hereford Bowling Club, started just off Bewell Street in 1484.
Today it is hidden from view, flanked by a block of flats, a pub bearing its name and the Tesco car park.
Club bosses have recently overcome access issues but continue to struggle with parking problems. They hope the history behind the bowling green will encourage more people to come along and find out.
The summer bowls season starts this Sunday (April 22). Old and new members are invited to the green at 2pm to enjoy a game or spectate.
